The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
